After watching the first episode of “Testament, Bible in Animation”, I had to see more. David and Saul is the only story on this DVD, but it does not disappoint. They fit a goodly amount of the conflict between these two men of the bible into the story. While the back of the box says “Full length Feature”, it is 30 minutes in actuality. The animation style was crisp and fresh, very high quality. The voice actors were good and not hokey like in some animated features. The story moved along fast and was very exciting. They did take some small liberties in the telling of the story, not an unusual step in any filmed product, but nothing that offends. This would be good for a bible study class of any age, very exciting seeing the acts in motion. The quality of the DVD was good, no issues with the picture or sound.
The series, produced over 10 years ago by Christmas films in Wales and Russia for the BBC, is not made for kids, but for all ages. I believe HBO family channel ran these for awhile a few years ago. There are other DVD’s in the series that are stand alone title’s, also about 30 minutes each. The series includes “Daniel”, “David and Saul”,”Moses”, “Jonah”, “The Creation and Noah”, “Elijah” (my favorite), “Ruth”, “Joseph”, and Abraham. The last 3 are in claymation or stop motion animation, like the holiday TV specials).
But if you want a good deal, there is another set from the same company that has 4 of the 30 minute stories from this Testament series in a 2 DVD box set. “Testament: The Bible in Animation Collection” is the title to search for, and Amazon.com is where I bought it. The price is almost the same as buying one individual story. That set has Jonah, Abraham, Elijah, and the Creation/Noah story.

After viewing one production in the series, we decided to buy them all. The unique and varied animation / claymation is appealing and we so appreciate the biblical accuracy with which these have been made. There are a lot of Christian DVDs out there for kids, but these captivate people of all ages and are true to the Word.

I purchased the entire Bible in Animation series after seeing the “Creation” story in this series. I purchased the “Collection” for my grandchildren as well. It is important to me to find visual products that can be used to teach that are not cartoonish or silly. For teaching, I like the drawings of the animated characters to not look like super heroes or entertainment cartoons.
The art in this series, claymation and animation, is real art, not distorted through the animation style. The content is easy enough for children to understand the story, but has thought provoking elements that adults will appreciate.
The music is excellent, especially in “Elijah” which apparently uses the music from the oratorio of the same name by Mendelssohn.
While some of the stories do not line up word for word with the Bible, all the parts of the story are there. They show respect for the Bible as the Word of God, and for those who believe it.
I highly recommend this story and all the others in the series. They are well worth the purchase price.

I teach Sunday School, and I am always looking for anything I can use as a teaching aid, especially something that is primarily visual. In the realm of video, the kind I was looking for would have to be necessarily short (30 minutes or so), and having a lot of emphasis on the Biblical text. The ‘Testament: The Bible in Animation’ series fit the bill quite well, even though many of the titles aren’t really appropriate for the kids (third grade) I am teaching. This one, David & Saul, is particularly good, capsulizing so much of David’s life, and in particular, his relationship with Saul. It is always perhaps the favorite for my class out of all the ones I show, and the low cost allows me to give it away as a prize to those students who want it. Invariably, many students pick this one eagerly, and I think it has something to do with the very professional quality of the movie, and the well acted out drama of the story. If you are looking for something for your kids, you really should not pass the one up. It’s a real winner.
