This book makes a nice coffee table book. But if you intend to use it for research, it will be of little use. It’s a big beautiful book full of pictures, with no text. It covers so many of the Disney animations, yet can only display a small amount of artwork for each one. It’s a minutia of the variety of artwork and illustrations that Disney artists have produced over the years, and alot of the artwork chosen for the book is far from the most exciting that was produced for each movie. It’s almost like they took the leftovers that were easily available and used them for the book. Also, alot of the artwork is not credited to the artist that did it. So even as picture reference, it’s not entirely helpful. But it’s a pretty book nonetheless, and there are tidbits here and there that are really beautiful examples of drawing. Amazon’s price is a really good price though for the quality of the book though.

I have got interest in Walt Disney production collecting the Italian magazine Topolino (edited in Italy from 1949). For those who love animation and want to appreciate the work of many talented animators, this book is a real gift because it gives the possibility to see and touch (and sniff, for those who like books even for the smell) many of these otherwise unreachable drawings.
Thanks to Walt Disney Animation Studios for this book.

God, words cannot express how excited I am for the rest of the series if this book is any indication of quality.
When I pulled this out of a box, I was thrilled already – this book is thick, hardcover, and looks every bit worth the money you spent on it. Opening the book is no exception. I’m an artist and not looking for books full of text, (hint who people do not draw: usually there isn’t a process that can be typed out and explained nicely) – I was looking for a book like this. Straight up, this is colour storyboards in an oversized format. It fits nicely in my lap, and everyone who picks up this book fawns over it.
There’s a nice variety in style and technique, some are labours of love in full colour – others are scribbled with a pencil. The reproductions are AWESOME.
My only quibbles
– Clearer credit to the known artists could be given, although I understand especially in the earlier films this wasn’t always possible and IMDB can usually be used to clear it up.
- Some of the storyboards are quite abrupt and they are a bit short (but this book is HUGE as it is, so I don’t know how that could be rectified.
- A few pages open up into huge fold outs, and while this is gorgeous and appreciated – it’s really easy to not catch them because they almost seal themselves with the weight of the book. And I’ve had my big lovely book almost rip on these pages a few times. It’s gorgeous, but awkward
.
I’m studying animation – this book is an amazing, invaluable reference. Buy it now, because it’s bound to turn into an expensive classic. I look forward to the next editions!

This book is an absolute delight. Stunning artwork, high quality presentation and design, great production values. If you like Disney animation you’ll love it. What a great beginning to what I think it will be a great line of books, this Disney Archives series. Count me on for future volumes for sure.
